In recent years, marine plastic pollution has become a hot topic in the global environmental protection field, as scientific research increasingly documents the accumulation of synthetic polymers in oceanic water columns and sediment layers. Changes in human industrial production and lifestyles have led to a sharp increase in the use of plastic products across consumer goods, packaging, textiles, and construction sectors, resulting in a large amount of waste entering the ocean through both direct disposal and atmospheric transport. The destruction of the marine ecosystem not only threatens the survival of marine life such as fish, crustaceans, and marine mammals that ingest plastic particles or become entangled in larger debris, but also poses a serious threat to the global ecological environment through bioaccumulation of microplastics in food webs and contamination of freshwater systems. Against this background, the OBP Marine Plastic Recycling Program was born, designed to address the challenge of post-consumer plastic waste recovery from coastal and offshore regions.

We have established a network of marine plastic waste acquisition points strategically positioned at the docks in Taizhou Wenling, Sanmen, and Taonü, which serve as collection hubs for plastic waste materials including fishing nets and ropes that are brought back from the ocean by fishermen engaged in commercial and subsistence fishing operations. The acquisition infrastructure at these docking facilities enables fishermen to deliver their recovered marine plastic waste directly, which not only creates supplementary income opportunities for fishing communities and supports economic stability across these coastal regions, thereby advancing shared prosperity objectives, but also facilitates the active participation of fishermen themselves in marine environmental protection initiatives, transforming them from passive ocean users into stewards of coastal ecosystems.
